The Pod Project - Part 3, Finished!

With the major construction done, the completion of the project was mostly embellishment.  I started by dying jute, sisal, and cotton twine in shades of blue/purple/magenta.

After rinsing and drying, the dyed twine was applied in curvy, meandering patterns and hand stitched to the pod; a curved needle is useful for this step.  Lighter colored cotton twine was wound around the darker jute in some places for variety before being sewn on.

Jute and embroidery thread were wrapped around 12 gauge wire.  The wire was twisted into tendril shapes and sewn to the pod to serve as legs to prop the piece up.

An additional edge lining was created using upholstery fabric for texture.  The circumference of the pod opening was measured to be sure the lining would fit.

This crown-shaped lining was attached with fabric glue to the inner edge of the pod opening.  Loose batting was placed in the bottom of the pod interior to allow padding under the next layer which would be the interior pod lining.

The interior pod lining is a simple sack shape.  You’ll see beads applied to this lining in the final photo.  Those were sewn on prior to installing the lining and sewing it to the bottom edge of the crown lining.

Various beads were sewn to the edge opening and crystals were added to the exterior.

Voila!  It is finished!
