Collaboration, Inspiration, and Enthusiasm!

It was another enjoyable Art Quilt Group meeting last night.  We had show-n-tell of woven pieces done in response to the challenge Marilyn and I issued, as well as other works members brought to share.  The collaborative piece Marilyn and I had made was finally revealed – a woven fish!  That certainly met the criteria of woven and non-traditional application.  For my part, I really enjoyed the collaborative process which began some months ago.  Through a series of e-mails, we brainstormed to make a sculptural piece.  Then we met, each of us bringing an assortment of fabrics in colors we were drawn to.  Marilyn set the tone with lime green, and I had a leaning toward raspberry.  We threw in some yellow, purple, teal, and orange…and before we knew it, we were off and running!

The fish idea was inspired by a garden sculpture, “Striped Fish” by Ben Gatski, I had seen on-line at Artfulhome.com.  The metal sculpture was divided into a top section, which was a bright lemon yellow, and a bottom section that was red.  It seemed like a natural fit and would be easily replicated in fabric and divided into work sections.  We worked on, you guess it (if you read my earlier entry about the Pod Project), a paper mache armature covered in batting and muslin.  From there we took turns passing the fish back and forth working on our woven sections.  We came back together to work on fins and embellishments.  At a point, when the fish was in my possession, I got carried away with embellishing and adding more details…and soon it was done, just awaiting the reveal.

And here it is!

It’s a happy fish!

There were so many good pieces shown last night, that one member had an inspired suggestion to put together a calendar, booklet, or other publication featuring the creations made by our members.  The idea met with great enthusiasm, and hopefully it will go somewhere.

Besides the woven fish and woven piece featured in my previous entry, I had two new additional pieces to share.  They are in keeping with the “structural” work I’ve been doing.  There are multiple views here to show the dimensions.
