There I was at the end of another work day, driving home. The first hub cap was done…and then I spied it – another hub cap on the side of the road. Someone had picked this one up and leaned it against a post. It was different. It had flare. It called to me like some Siren from ancient shores! Before I knew it I had turned the car around, went back, and grabbed it.
Even then, I didn’t plan to start on it right away. I liked making the first one, it turned out well, and it was fun exploring once more with paint (and fabric), so I figured to try it again, but this hub cap would have to get in line behind several other projects in the works, projects with deadlines!
I was ready to put in on the back burner and write it off as temptation trying to get me off track from things I needed to get done, but AQF Marilyn thought it was a sign I should make another hub cap, so I did. I knew I could get it done in an evening if I did a paint finish, so I set aside one night. But, as it turns out, fabric is “where I’m at” so of course I had to do some sewing. And, I would have finished in one night, but the grass desperately needed mowing. So it goes with the best laid plans of mice and men…it took me one day and part of another to finish, but I’m happy with the results.
The hub cap is from some Pontiac make of vehicle. The whole piece has a sense of whimsy, and the central embellishment is a snippet from an orange feather boa at the end of a piece of wire. It reminded me of the flower from Horton Hears a Who, so I’ve entitled this piece (and I don’t usually give titles to my works) “Horton Hears a Pontiac.”
